Our History

Derba MIDROC Cement PLC. (DMC) was founded on the 13th of February 2006 and inaugurated on February 05, 2012 in the presence of the Chairman and Founder Sheik Mohammed Hussein Ali Al –Amoudi. Since its inauguration the company is contributing its share in unleashing the potentials of Ethiopian cement industry by availing cement, the critical input that underwrites infrastructure development abundantly and at a reasonable price. With a total investment cost of USD$ 600 miilion, the company is one of the largest and state-of-the-art cement factory in Ethiopia. Which includes Derba Cement, Derba Transport with over 800 Volvo trucks and Maya PP Bag.

The cement plant is located at the top of Muger valley – some 70 kms North-West of Addis Ababa where the major raw material required for cement production are in the valley. The company also enjoys proximity to the market offered by Oromiya and Amhara Regional States and the City State of Addis Ababa. The main raw material deposits are spread across the valley where the plant is located. A high capacity belt conveyor of 6.4 KMs, the longest in Africa, have been erected to transport raw materials uphill with four segment sections to the pre-blending stockpiles. At the plant site the limestone crusher is a robust design with a crushing capacity of 1,100 tons per hour. The plant capacity primarily considered a mix ratio of OPC:PPC at 20:80 and kiln run days 330 per annum. One kiln and three cement mills cater and provide the flexibility in the production of different types of cement. The process control is fully automated and ably handled by highly qualified personnel.

Currently, the plant’s clinker production capacity is 5,600 tons per day (7,000 tons of cement per day). As demand is widely expected, the company has a strategic ambition and projected plan to double the production capacity of its plant by making use of the existing facilities, such as the limestone crusher, the cross-country belt, the housing and other facilities that are primarily acquired in anticipation of the second production line. DMC believes that these  facilitate and justify the construction of the second phase of the cement plant. To that effect, negotiations have taken place with technology suppliers and debt financers with the ultimate ambition of this endeavour, which is, to double the production capacity of Derba MIDROC Cement PLC and to satisfy the mushrooming demand of cement products that is being observed as medium and large projects get underway in the country and beyond.

DMC works under the auspicious of Derba Group, which is being incorporated to strategically manage and oversee the Founders’ investment being made in strategically important sectors with emphasis to construction materials manufacturing. Derba Transport (DT) plc and MAYA pp bag manufacturing plc, Derba Lime and chemicals, Dashen Cement Manufacturing plc, Derba Water Drilling and Hydrology   are companies that run under the auspicious of the Group.
